The Owensville Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1929 as an all volunteer department, as it still is today. The department is owned an operated, and partially fund by the City of Owensville. The rest of the funding comes from the Owensville Rural Fire Protective Association. The Department runs between 260 and 300 emergency calls a year.

The Department serves the entire southern half of Gasconade County and part of Osage county. Currently there are 28 members on the department that work out of three Fire Stations. Two Stations are in Owensville and one in Mt. Sterling.

The Department has the only Hazardous Material Emergency Response Team with in the Counties of Gasconade, Maries, Osage, and Crawford. This team was formed on a grant awarded from the Department of Homeland Security in 2005.
